Out of Town Visitors

Last weekend we had some out of town visitors come and stay with us. My friend Gavin from high School, and his girlfriend came to stay with us. They live in Toronto and we met up with them on our last visit there. Alison is in a choir and they had a concert at the Blacksheep Inn in Wakefield Quebec.

I had never heard of this place but it turns out that it is quite the place for live entertainment. It is a bit of a drive to get to it, and not that much to see, but the town is cozy and it seems like this place has a good reputation for quality entertainment.

So they drove up on Friday and the concert was Saturday. Alison had to be there for 1:00 to rehearse and whatnot. Gavin and I decided to head back in to Ottawa for some shopping before the concert. We should have stayed in Wakefield because we spent most of the time driving and ran out of gas. Gavin realized that the tank was empty on out way back to Wakefield. We coasted into a service station on fumes. It was full service and when Gavin stopped the car the attendant asked him if he could pull forward some more. Gavin just laughed and said probably not.

When we finally made it back to the Blacksheep Inn we had a heck of a time finding parking. Then just as we are about to go in we saw a car in the parking lot and the two girls inside were waving trying to get our attention. We both looked at each other, thinking that they were trying to get the attention of the other. Then I realized that one of the girls was a co-worker of mine. Her and her friend had come for the concert. What a small world.

The concert was good. Afterwards we went to the house of the organizer for Goat stew. The other group performing was a youth group doing African drumming and dancing. The Goat stew was part of a traditional African feast we were invited to attend. I had never had goat before so of course I was eager to give it a try. After all the many country foods I ate up north I am up to try just about anything.

The had planned on driving home on Sunday but the region was blasted with a massive winter storm. We ended up getting a total of 37 cm of snow. They had no choice but to spend another night and left Monday morning.

Costco Christmas Party

Last night was the big Costco buying office Christmas party. Even thought it is my first year working for Costco, it is the third year in a row that I have attended this Christmas party. Louisa brought this to my attention driving in the car the other day. Two years ago I went as her date, last year as her boyfriend, this year as her Fiance, and next year as her husband. Pretty cool when you think of it like that.

The party was great. We had more fun than the last two years. The social committee changed things up a bit. There were no gaming tables for gambling this year. At first I was a disappointed because I always did well there. It was for play money of course but you used to be able to take your winnings and buy tickets for some draws.

They did have a few games though to make things interesting. The food was good, the music was great, and we just had a good time all round. Louisa was of course breath taking. Hopefully the picture will turn out ok. We haven't had the best of luck at taking good Christmas party photos the past two years.

I joined a gym

Two posts in one day, I'm on a roll. Well this has been long overdue. I finally joined a gym. Yes thats right. I am finally going to get in shape. I have been thinking about this for some time. Last week was Health and Safety week at work and reps from Goodlife Fitness Clubs were invited to recruit new members. I signed up, not only for a membership but also six sessions with a personal trainer. I started today. The gym is right across from work and I have time to play with during the day because Louisa works an hour longer than I do. So I have no reason not to stick with it. Plus they are building a Goodlife very close to our house so once it is open I will have a place to work out in the evenings or weekends if I ever choose. Feel free to pat me on the back.

Paintball

This post is. I went for a day of paintball games for the first time the other weekend. Something that I have wanted to try for some time. This day of games was organized by a guy at work. I have to say I had fun, most of the day, but man was I ever sore afterwards. So much squatting and crouching. Seeing it was my first time my only wish going into it was that I wasn't the first one out. Luckily each game only lasted for 15 minutes so even if you did get out you didn't have to wait for too long before you could join back in.

The first game I managed to not be the first one out, but I didn't last too long. I did get better and by the fourth game I managed to last the whole 15 minutes. I discovered that my best strategy was to play defense. Find a good place to bunker down and and keep an eye out for incoming targets. My greatest victory however was one of the last games we played I got out the last remaining people on the other team and and won the game for my side.

All in all I had a blast but next time I am going to be sure to stretch before hand. I have some pictures loaded on http://picasaweb.google.com/joev17/Paintball.

New Blog

Well I hope you like me new Blog. I have had my website for a long time now, and I made a few attempts to add a Blog to my site but never liked the results. The problem was I was using the Blogging program provided by Tripod who is hosting my site. I found it too restrictive. This time I thought I would try Blogger by Google and wow what a difference. This is much better. I hope you agree. The first post was just a cut and paste from my last attempt at a blog. Hopefully there will be more to come here.

Heeleys

Ok I am going to try to start writing a blog. For my first entry I thought I would tell about my experience with Heeleys. If you don't know Heeleys are those sneakers that the kids wear with the wheel in the heel. You see them gliding all over the place in the malls and everywhere else. When I first saw them I thought "If only they had those when I was a kid." I used to joke that they should make them in adult sizes and if I ever saw a pair that fit me I would buy them. Well wouldn't you know I was shopping at Costco and what do I see? A pair of size 10 Heeleys. I couldn't believe it. Of course I had to buy them, after all they were only $48.97 or something like that. It turns out that walking in those things is not as easy as it looks. Imagine wearing rollerblades with only one wheen in the heel. Thats pretty much what they are. I just couldn't do it. Fortunatly Costco has a generous return policy and I promptly brought them back the next day. The lesson learned - I am not a kid anymore.
